Bargaining Update

The Service Trades Council Union and Disney Management have met with a Federal Mediator on December 2, 2010 and January 7, 2011. The Bargaining Committee for the Union is determined to reach an agreement with Disney that “leaves no one behind”. Each of the Union’s proposals has attempted to lower medical costs and/or increase wages to offset each other so that no one makes less money at the end of the contract than they do today. Disney has rejected each of these proposals.

Another mediation session has been tentatively scheduled for February 10 or 11, 2011. The location of the discussion is to be determined. The current extension of the contract runs through February 17, 2011.

Health Insurance Increases

On January 1, 2011, Disney increased the weekly contribution that you pay out of your check each week for Health Insurance. The Union does not agree with this change and has filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). We should know the outcome of this charge over the next period of time. It is possible that this issue could be settled through bargaining.

The Union was able to take action on this issue because of the commitment to member involvement. Shop Stewards talking with members was an important step in learning of this change and being able to address it.
